Ashamed of the monster born from his pride, King Minos sought to hide the Minotaur from the world. Before they took flight, the father gave a grave warning: “Fly the middle course. If you fly too low, the sea spray will weigh you down. If you fly too high, the sun’s heat will melt the wax.” They soared from the prison, tasting a freedom no mortal had ever known. But the joy of flight was intoxicating. Icarus, overcome by the thrill and the warmth of the sun, forgot his father’s counsel. He soared higher and higher until the sun’s fire melted his wings. The ambitious boy plunged into the deep blue sea, leaving behind only feathers on the waves and a father’s eternal despair.

Success often breeds a dangerous illusion: that one is above the laws of the Gods. King Minos, at the height of his power, sought to prove his divine right to rule by asking Poseidon, the God of the Sea, for a sign. Poseidon answered by sending a magnificent, snow-white bull from the crashing waves, with the strict condition that Minos would sacrifice the creature back to the sea as a sign of gratitude.

However, Minos was overcome by the bull’s breathtaking beauty and his own greed. In an act of Hubris—the fatal sin of overbearing pride—he broke his sacred vow, hiding the divine bull in his own herds and sacrificing an inferior one in its place. He believed he could deceive the Gods.

The punishment was swift and cruel. Poseidon did not strike Minos with lightning; instead, he twisted the mind of Minos’s queen, Pasiphaë, with an unnatural obsession for the bull. From this cursed union, a monster was born: the Minotaur. Part human, part beast, the Minotaur became the living embodiment of Minos’s shame—a dark shadow growing within the palace walls, demanding a price that would haunt Crete for generations.

Fearing a prophecy that one of his children would overthrow him, Kronos committed the ultimate atrocity: he devoured each of his newborns at birth.
